While we were looking at all the cute bunnies Philip asked Levi if he would like to get some rabbits so that we could have some rabbit meat to eat. Levi replied very simply, "No, I think rabbits are better to stay alive." I was a little surprised, because Levi usually asks about eating all different kinds of animals. Perhaps looking and their sweet little faces, round cuddly bodies and soft fluffy fur just made the idea of eating bunny for dinner a little too hard to imagine.
As we check out all the livestock we happened upon one of the live judging sessions of some cows, and didn't really understand a word of what the judge was saying (other than wanting the females to have open pelvises...this L&D nurse understood that. Ha!). A fluffy little black cow won and her teenage handler seemed very pleased. We also came upon some farm equipment and the boys couldn't resist climbing into the driver's seats and playing pretend.
After visiting lots of show animals we headed over to the milking demonstration. The boys enjoyed seeing pictures of a dairy farm (it looked a lot like the one we visited in Wisconsin in 2012) and watching the cow get hooked up to the milking machine. Joel asked me if he could drink some and was sad to find out he could not.
A must for every trip to the Stock Show with kids is a trip to the free petting zoo. Levi was a little unsure about feeding the animals at first, but after watching Philip and Joel feed some hungry little goats and petting a few chickens he shook the nerves and had fun feeding several animals. The goats and the alpaca were the most aggressive eaters and Joel would have fed them pounds of food if he'd had the opportunity. Levi spent most of his time petting the chickens and trying to grab their legs. He was very gentle, but they were not fond of having their feet touched. Every time Levi is around chickens I am amazed at how much they let him touch them and it makes me wish we had some of our own. He would love to take care of them and....yummm, fresh eggs.

After the petting zoo we bought a few tickets for the carnival area and let Levi and Joel each pick one ride. Levi chose bumper cars and Joel chose some alligators that moved in a circle. While driving the bumper cars Levi seemed to be having a good (although occasionally serious) time, but once he was done he insisted that it was not fun. Hrumph. Joel, however, loved his gator ride even though it was surprisingly quick moving and wished it was longer. I was surprised at how brave and independent Joel was because I have been struggling with him a little lately with a tendency to be clingy and unwilling to try new things.
After the rides we headed over to the children's barn to see all the baby animals before heading home. This area is always a big hit with the boys and this year was no exception. The chicks and ducks were by far the favorites. The boys went back and forth from watching the chicks ride the mini feed ferris wheel as well as seeing one as it stepped out of its egg for the first time to the ducklings swimming and sliding down the feed/water slide. So so cute! There was also an adorable lamb who was just bouncing and frolicing around it's momma, but the load BAAA that the momma let out when ever you got close was a little unsettling for Levi and especially Joel.
We enjoyed yet another successful trip to the Stock Show, and I'm hopeful that this will be a fun annual family outing for years to come. Skipping the Rodeo this year was a good decision, but I'm sure in years to come we will enjoy that big show again as well. Yee Haw! We love Fort Worth :)
