Chickens!
Philip and I have wanted to have our own small flock of chickens in our backyard ever since we moved into our house nearly 5 years ago. In April we bought 7 one to two day old chicks from our local feed store. Unfortunately, the next day one of our sweet babies died from the stress of being transferred to a new home. But, the next day Philip brought home two chicks of breeds we were hoping to have from another feed store, so we ended up with a flock of 8. All the babies have done very well and are now about 4 months old, healthy and happy. The kids named them Jellybean (Ameracauna), Peep (Easter Egger), Hedwig (Light Bramah), Golden Chick Chick (Gold Comet), Bobetta (Gold Comet), Nugget (Cubalaya), Cindy Lou (Plymouth Rock), and Buffalo (Plymouth Rock). The chicks lived the first 8 weeks inside in a dog cage, then moved into the playroom at night and a chicken tractor in the back yard during the day. At 12 weeks they started sleeping outside in their coop. Philip worked hard to design, build and beautifully finish out a very nice coop for our girls. We have all been enjoying watching the chickens grow and are looking forward to them starting to lay eggs soon!
