Levi's First Triathlon

Levi ran in his first triathlon this morning! He did a great job, and had a lot of fun too! One of the first things he said after crossing the finish line was, "can we do it again next weekend?!" Levi has grown up watching his Daddy compete in triathlons, and has always said he wanted to race just like Daddy when he is a big man. Luckily, there is an annual, laid back, kid friendly triathlon just 15 minutes from our house. The swim was 25 meters, followed by a 1 mile bike and finished with a 1/3 mile run. It was not timed, and all participants received a finisher medal. The purpose is for the kids to be exposed to the fun of triathlons, learn how the race goes, and mostly just have fun! Since the race is scheduled just before Halloween they played Halloween songs (like Monster Mash), gave out candy for treats, and encouraged participants to dress up. Levi wore the official race shirt which has big eyes on the front.

Levi was so excited when we asked him if he wanted to sign up for the race, and had a blast getting ready. Philip bought him some fancy tri shorts, and new running shoes. We also swam laps at the rec, and ran/rode bikes on the trails near our house. He did so well during practice, but I was a little nervous that when the pressure was on he might be too nervous to jump in the pool all by himself. Thankfully, he seemed only slightly nervous and mostly just excited! We are so proud of our little triathlete, he was so brave and did his best, as well as being a good sport. I'm looking forward to races in the future, and hope this leads to a lifetime love of healthy activity for Levi. Another hope I have is for Philip and Levi to grow close and bond through competing in triathlons together. It was really fun to watch how excited they both were about the race, and then to see them working together to help Levi finish his race well. One parent was permitted to wait at the end of the pool, help during transitions, and jog along during the bike and run. Philip helped Levi dry off after the swim, get his shoes, shirt and helmet on and head out for the bike, start and finish the bike and then transition to and complete the run portion of the race. What a special day for two of my favorite guys!

I may have been that mom, and may have gone a little picture crazy...

Transition area all set up! One excited little triathlete :)

Levi loved getting marked just like Dad always does
All the kids waiting to start
Joel was SO proud of his brother...precious!
He was so brave and well behaved...patiently waiting to swim.
Levi recently decided to swim like Daddy (his freestyle stroke isn't too bad for a 4 year old!)
